Pottery Production Team Member

Position Description

Hands on Pottery/Hands on Clay Collective is looking for a friendly, compassionate, solution-oriented thinker to join our small, hard-working team. As a production studio team member you will support our studio manager and other staff in the day-to-day tasks that arise in our pottery studio! In this entry-level role, you would become well-versed in the Hands on Pottery / Hands on Clay Collective brand and represent our collective as a member and point of contact for customers, retailers, and students!

We are looking for a team member that wishes to retain a long-term position, is willing to pitch in wherever necessary in the studio (and gallery if needed) and is passionate about the success of Hands on Clay Collective.

Company Description

Hands on Clay Collective is a line of mugs, tumblers and other pottery made by hand in Victoria, BC by our team of production potters. Our studio, Hands on Pottery, is where we make our work, as well as teach workshops and classes. Hands on Pottery is celebrating our 10-year anniversary, and we look forward to working with a team member who is excited to continue to grow with us!


Responsibilities

    • Studio maintenance, including clay recycling, mopping, glaze upkeep, etc.
    • Producing pieces for Hands On Clay Collective line of ceramics: trimming pots, attaching handles, surface design, glazing, etc.
    • Kiln loading, unloading, and shelf maintenance
    • Other duties as assigned or needed by the Studio Manager

15-20 hours/week:

    • Weekday schedule is flexible
    • Saturday shift from 1-5pm required
    • Wage is dependent on experience, entry-level.

     

Qualifications

  • Comfortable with repetition
  • Exceptional written and spoken communication skills
  • Comfortable working across multiple communication channels
  • Positive attitude and ability to work as part of a team
  • Technically proficient
  • Self-reliant and adaptable
  • Ability to receive, process, and incorporate feedback from managerial staff
  • Background in pottery a plus, but we are willing to train the right person

Extensive physical exertions which include but are not limited to:

  • Lifting of up to 50 lbs. as needed
  • Ability to adhere to all safety protocols

Progress Reports

Your first review will be 90 days after your start date, then you will have your development review every 6-months for the following 2 years, and annually for the remainder of your employment. During your reviews, your wage will be assessed and increased pending positive performance.

If the results of a review are unsatisfactory, more frequent reviews may be scheduled to monitor improvements. If assigned improvement goals are not reached, a warning schedule may be implemented including the possibility of termination.
The following metrics will be used to determine your performance:

  • Your proficiency in production including handling, surface design,
  • Your willingness and enthusiasm to complete tasks as needed by managerial staff
  • Your understanding of the brand, products, and problem-solving
  • Your confidence in answering HOCC/HOP’s FAQ
  • Your proficiency in Asana, Square, Google Tools
  • Your retention of feedback regarding technical systems in the studio
